Chateau Clos des Jacobins Grand Cru Classé 2012

James Suckling 93 Points.

APPELLATION : Saint-Emilion Grand Cru – Grand Cru Classé

ASSEMBLAGE : Merlot: 80% Cabernet Franc: 18% Cabernet Sauvignon: 2%

STORY

Clos des Jacobins owes its name to the Benedictine preaching monks who were baptized Jacobins in reference to Saint-Jacques, patron saint of the Parisian convent of the order.

The Jacobins who lived on the outskirts of the city used the buildings of the farm to welcome pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela and the vineyard to produce their wine which then provided them with the bulk of their income.

SITUATION

Clos des jacobins is located at the entrance to the medieval city, in the heart of the great terroirs of Saint-Emilion. Since the 17th century, the vineyard, which is particularly homogeneous, has been in one piece around the cellars. The vines are at the foot of the hill, thus benefiting from the erosion of the plateau which mixes limestone scree with clay. This location and southern exposure make for a unique, precocious and generous terroir. All the cellars have been completely renovated. The wooden vats are thermo-regulated.

After being elevated to the rank of the greatest wines of Saint-Emilion between 1940 and 1950, Clos des Jacobins has been classified since the origins of the classification in 1954. Today, it has won the Coupe des Grands Crus Classés de Saint-Emilion in Hong Kong in 2006 after 2 semi-finals and followed by a final in 2008.

James Suckling Avril 2013 92-93/100

“Aromas of blueberry and raspberries follow through to full body, with fine tannins and a long finish. Intense for the vintage. This is better than 2011 and very well done.”

CELLAR TRACKERKevin Shin – Avril 2013 94/100

“I always seem to like this wine at EP. Opulent blue fruits, blueberry jam, fresh blueberries, excellent concentration, bright acidity, silky palate and noticeable but not obtrusive tannins.”
